Reno Pond Hockey was coming off of a 6-1 win against the Dough Boys. Reno Pond Hockey was 4-3-0. Reno Pond Hockey was in 3rd place in the standings. Grrrowlers were coming off of a 2-12 loss to Slappy Gilmores. Grrrowlers were on a two game losing streak. Grrrowlers were 2-5-0. Grrrowlers were in 6th (last) in the standings. The all time record between Reno Pond Hockey and Grrrowlers was 1-0-0. Reno Pond Hockey last played Grrrowlers on June 20th, 2022. That game ended in a 6-3 Reno Pond Hockey win.

Reno Pond Hockey would score the games opening goal. They would score with just under 6 minutes to go in the first period. On the rush #36 Brandon Angues put the puck towards the net and it trickled in. The goal was assisted by #19 Brent Cordell.

Reno Pond Hockey had a 1-0 lead after the first period.

The Grrrowlers tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period. Reno Pond Hockey got the lead back fairly quickly on the powerplay. A pass was sent to the opposite side winger. The pass didn’t connect cleanly but the puck was recovered. A pass was sent to the opposite side defender. He took a shot. He faked a shot then passed the puck into the slot where #19 Brent Cordell would score. Assists on this goal came from #55 Derek Cordell and #28 (C) Zac Seidemann.

Less then two minutes later Reno Pond Hockey would extend their lead to 3-1. #55 Derek Cordell would block a shot from the point. The puck would come out to the neutral zone. #19 Brent Cordell would recover the puck and score on the breakaway.

Reno Pond Hockey would score again with around 10 minutes and 30 seconds to go in the second period. Just after the penalty kill Reno Pond Hockey stole the puck int he neutral zone. That would create a two on one. #36 Brandon Angues would pass the puck to #84 Josh Steward. His shot would find the back of the net.

Reno Pond Hockey scored again with just under 3 minutes to go in the third period. The puck was put through the crease by #19 Brent Cordell. #10 Bihn Ly recovered the puck. He took a shot from on the goal line and it went in.

Reno Pond Hockey had a 5-1 lead going into the third period.

With under 3 minutes to go in the game Reno Pond Hockey would expand their lead to 6-1. Reno Pond Hockey tried to get the puck out of their defensive zone. The Grrrowlers kept the puck in at the blue line. The pass across to the other defender misfired and the puck went out into the neutral zone. The Grrrowlers couldn’t handle the puck cleanly and #84 Josh Steward took the puck. He ended up on a breakaway where he would shoot and score.

The Grrrowlers would score one more with under two minutes to go in the game. That goal would be controversial as the player who scored cross-checked one of the Reno Pond Hockey players to knock him off the puck during the play. The final score was 6-2 Reno Pond Hockey.

Reno Pond Hockey had a lot of offensive zone time to start the game. Reno Pond Hockey were able to establish how they wanted the game to be played early on. They were fairly comfortable playing with a one goal lead. There wasn’t any panic in the way they were playing they just stuck with their game plan. In the second period Reno Pond Hockey didn’t panic when the game was tied. They went out there continued to play their game. By doing that they were able to take a large advantage into the third period. Overall Reno Pond Hockey outplayed the Grrrowlers. They got to loose pucks first. They kept steeling the puck. They pressured the Grrrowlers whenever they had the puck. They out skated them. There was a lot of open ice during the game and Reno Pond Hockey took advantage of that. They were able to keep the puck in the offensive zone a lot. It was just a really strong effort from Reno Pond Hockey, that turned into them consistently outplaying the Grrrowlers.

Reno Pond Hockey is in a playoff spot. If the playoffs started today they would play Mid-Ice Crisis. With two games left Reno Pond Hockey only needs 1 point to secure their playoff spot. If Reno Pond Hockey can at least force a shootout in their last two games they will secure a playoff spot. If that does not happen they will have to wait on results from other games to see if they will make the playoffs.
