The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 continued last night and early this morning. There was four matches. The United States played Vietnam. Zambia played Japan. England played Haiti. Denmark played China. There are three more matches coming up tonight and early tomorrow morning. Sweden takes on South Africa. The Netherlands will play Portugal. France will play Jamaica.

United States vs Vietnam
The United States played Vietnam. Check out my post game review for this match if you have not yet. The United States scored in the 14′ minute and 45+7′ minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. They then scored in the 77″ minute to make it 3-0. The final score was 3-0. Sophia Smith and Lindsey Horan scored the goal for the United States.
The United States dominated the game. Unfortunately they were unable to finish more of their shots. Shots were going wide, hitting posts, and being blocked. If the United States was a little bit tighter on finishing they would have scored like seven goals. Vietnam played like they lost the game before it even started. To prove the United States dominated this match Vietnam didn’t have a single shot in the game.

Zambia vs Japan
Zambia played Japan. This was a Group C match. Japan scored the opening goal in the 23′ minute but it was called back. Japan scored the first actual goal in the 43′ minute. #7 Hinata Miyazawa scored the goal. Japan had a 1-0 lead over Zambia at halftime. Japan would have another goal disallowed in the 50″ minute. Zambia got a yellow card in the 51″ minute. Japan got a penalty in the 52′ minute that was called back. Japan made it 2-0 with a goal from #11 Mina Tanaka in the 55′ minute. Japan added to their lead in the 62′ minute. #7 Hinata Miyazawa scored that one. Japan scored again in the 71′ minute. That goal was scored by #13 Jun Endo. Zambia was awarded a yellow card in the 90+7′ minute. It was #1 Catherine Musonda’s second yellow so she was awarded a red card. That was a wild situation. The keeper got a red and they put in their back up keeper. At the same time Japan was set to take a penalty kick. The first penalty was saved but they redid it because the keeper stepped off the line early. So on the second attempt Japan scored their fifth goal. #9 Riko Ueki got the goal. The final score was 5-0 Japan.
Japan absolutely dominated this game. This is how I thought the United States game would go. Japan were the heavy favorites going into this match and they did not disappoint. Zambia had zero shots. There was nothing Zambia could really do. From what I watched Japan was just in control. Zambia could’t get the ball out of their own half and it was chance after chance for Japan. Zambia didn’t even have any good possession. They would take the ball up and give it away almost every time Japan challenged for it. It was a disappointing showing from Zambia but in the end it was not surprising.

England vs Haiti
England played Haiti. It was a Group D match up. The game started off with a penalty that was called off after VAR (review) in the 17′ minute. Haiti then got a yellow card in the 19′ minute. England was awarded a penalty after VAR (review) in the 26′ minute. In the 29″ England would score the games only goal on penalty. #8 Georgia Stanway scored the goal. England was awarded a yellow card just before halftime. England got another yellow card just after halftime. the Final score was 1-0 England.
I expected more from England. I expected another one sided match. This was not that at all. England had plenty of chances but just didn’t find the back of the net more than once. Haiti had a few chances bit could find the back of the et at all. In the end England just held on to their 1-0 lead.

Denmark vs China
Denmark played China. It was a Group D match. Denmark were awarded a yellow card in the 40′ minute. The score was 0-0 going after the first half. Denmark finally scored the games only goal in the 89′ minute. #9 Amalie Vangsgaard scored the goal. Denmark would hang on to win 1-0.
This was a close game. I thought this game would be tight. This game could end up being the decided between Denmark and China to see who makes it out of the group stage. Overall it was a back and fourth game with both teams getting plenty of chances. Denmark just happened to get the endge on China.

Japan now lead Group C. Zambia is now in the back of Group C. Denmark now lead Group D. Haiti are in last in that group. The United States now lead Group E. Vietnam are last in that group now. Group F, Group G, and Group H have not played yet.

Sweden is playing south Africa. Sweden should win that one but I don’t think it will be a blowout. The Netherlands play Portugal. That should be a close game with the Netherlands have a slight advantage and winning it. France will play Jamaica. I think France will win that one and that could end up being another one sided match.
