The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 continued last night. There was only two matches. It was the final two matches of the group stage. Group H has now finished their group play. Morocco played Colombia. Korea Republic played Germany. All eight of the groups have finished group play. We are now onto the knockout stage. Now it is single elimination. Win or go home. Games that end in draws will now have shootouts to determine the winner. Games will continue tomorrow. There are no more games until Friday, August 4th, at 10:00 PM PST.
Sixteen teams have been eliminated in the group stage. Sixteen teams have advanced to the Round of 16.

Morocco vs Colombia
Morocco played Colombia. It was a group H match and the last match of the group stage for both teams. Colombia was already moving on to the Round of 16. If Morocco won and Germany won, it will come down to tie breakers between Morocco and Germany. If Morocco won and Germany lost, Morocco would advance. If Morocco lost they would be eliminated. If Morocco drew and Germany drew, it would come down to tiebreakers between Morocco and Germany. If Morocco drew and Germany lost, Morocco would advance.
Morocco was awarded a penalty in extra time of the first half. Morocco didn’t score on the penalty in the 45+4′ minute. The penalty was saved. However Morocco was able to put the rebound into the net. #16 Anissa Lahmari scored the goal. Morocco had a 1-0 lead at halftime. Colombia got a yellow card in the 51′ minute. Morocco got a yellow card in the 90+11′ minute. The final score was 1-0 Morocco.
Morocco won a somewhat uneventful game. The result of this game put Morocco in a good position to advance.

SouthKorea Republic vs Germany
Korea Republic played Germany in the final Group H game of the group stage. It was the last group stage game for these teams and the tournament. If Germany won and Morocco won, it would come down to tiebreakers. If Germany won and Morocco lost or drew, Germany would advance. If Germany drew and Morocco drew, it would come down to tie breakers. If Germany lost and Morocco lost, it will come down to tie breakers between Germany, Morocco, and the Korea Republic.
The Korea Republic scored early. They took the lead in the 6′ minute with a goal from #Cho So-hyun. She got the ball behind the German defense it what to me looked clearly offsides. She was able to beat the goalie one on one. Germany answered with a goal in the 42′ minute from #11 Alexandra Popp. The ball was crossed in and she headed it into the back of the net. The score was tied at 1-1 at halftime. In the 58′ minute A goal was called back from Germany after VAR (review). Germany got a yellow card in the 90+6′ minute. The final score was a 1-1 draw.
Germany didn’t get the blowout they were expecting. They finish the tournament with an extremely disappointing result. They came into the tournament ranked number two. They were expected to go deep into the knockout stage. It was a tough way for Germany to go out. I still think the Korea Republic goal was offsides. If that was not offsides then neither was the German’s second goal. But Germany also had enough shots and opportunities to take the lead and didn’t. With this result both teams have been eliminated in the group stage.
Colombia has won Group H. Morocco came in second and will be advancing to the Round of 16. This is their first time in the FIFA Women’s World Cup so this will be the first time that they are advancing. Germany came in third and is eliminated.
