Netherlands vs South Africa

The Netherlands played South Africa. The Netherlands won Group E. south Africa came in third place in Group G. This was the third time in a row that the Netherlands have made it to the Round of 16 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. They were the runners up in 2019. This is the first time South Africa has advanced to the Round of 16 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This is only their second FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Netherlands scored the games first goal in the 9′ minute. #6 Jill Roord scored the goal. A corner kick for the Netherlands was directed towards the net but blocked. The Netherlands got the rebound and scored. At halftime the Netherlands lead the game 1-0. In the 56′ minute a goal was called back for the Netherlands after VAR (review). The Netherlands got a yellow card in the 67′ minute. The Netherlands scored in the 68′ minute with a goal from #7Lineth Beerensteyn. She beat the South African player to the ball. She took a shot and scored. That was one goal the keeper should have saved. She let it slip right through her. The final score was 2-0 Netherlands.

I don’t think there was a lot of doubt as to who would win this match. The shots and chances were close but South Africa couldn’t get a goal. South Africa are the first team not to score a goal in the Knock out stage. The Netherlands are the first team to get a shutout in the knockout stage. With that result the Netherlands have advanced to the Quarterfinals. They will take on Spain in the Quarterfinals. This is the second FIFA Women’s World Cup in a row where the Netherlands have advanced to the Quarterfinals. South Africa have been eliminated in their first ever appearance in the Round of 16 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The United states missed their fifth attempt. Both teams got their sixth attempt. Sweden scored on their seventh attempt. The United States missed on their seventh attempt. The final score was 0(5)-0(4) Sweden.

Sweden won a close match. I will be getting out a game review for this one soon. It was a disappointing result for the United States. This was the second game in a row where they did not score. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will ultimately go down as the worst performance from the United States so far. With that result Sweden moves on the the Quarterfinals. They will play Japan. The United States have been eliminated in the Round of 16 for the first time.
