The knock out stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 continued last night with two more Round of 16 matches. The Group D winners England played Nigeria. The Group B winners Australia played Denmark. There are two more matches coming up. The Group H winners Colombia will play Jamaica. The Group F winners France will play Morocco.

With the latest results six teams have advanced to the Quarterfinals. Six teams have also been eliminated in the Round of 16. There are only two more Round of 16 matches left.

England vs Nigeria

England played Nigeria. England won Group D. Nigeria came in second place in Group B. This was Englands’s fifth ever Round of 16 match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. They have advanced past the Round of 16 in every FIFA Women’s World cup they have qualified for. England Finished the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 in fourth place (they lost the third place match). This was Nigeria’s third ever Round of 16 match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 Nigeria was eliminated in the Round of 16. Their best ever result was making it to the Quarterfinals in 1999.

In the 33′ minute a penalty kick that was awarded o England was overturned. At halftime the score was 0-0. In the 84′ minute Englands #7 Lauren James got a yellow card for a foul. After VAR (review) she was given a red card for stomping on the Nigerian player. After 90+6′ minutes the game was still scoreless. It went into extra time. Nothing changed in extra time. The game went to a penalty shootout. England won the Penalty shootout 4-2. The final score was 0(4)-0(2) England.

This was the second match in the Round of 16 to go to a penalty shootout. It was also the second game in a row where neither team scored. England moves on after a poor performance and a mostly uneventful game. They were outshot twenty to twelve by Nigeria. England barely had majority of the possession. It was a tightly contested game but not much happened either. With the result of this game England has advanced to the Quarterfinals for the fifth time ever. They will play Colombia or Jamaica. Nigeria has been eliminated.

Australia vs Denmark

Australia took on Denmark. Australia won Group B. Denmark came in second in Group D. This was Australia’s third ever Round of 16 Match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 they were eliminated in the Round of 16. Their best ever result was making it to the Quarterfinals which they did in 2007, 2011, and 2015. This was Denmarks third ever Round of 16 match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Denmark did not qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019. They also did not qualify in 2011 or 2015, Their best result was reaching the Quarterfinals in 1991 and 1995.

Australia took the lead in the 29′ minute with a goal from #9 Caitlin Foord. The ball was put behind the Denmark defense and she beat them to the ball. She took the ball and scored from there. At halftime the score was 1-0 Australia. Denmark got a yellow card in the 66′ minute. Australia scored their second goal in the 70′ minute. #16 Hayley Raso scored the goal. Australia passed the ball around in the box and she scored. The final score was 2-0 Australia.

This was the fourth game in a row in the Round of 16 where at least one team did not score. This was a fairly even match. Australia was able to get one in and that was the difference maker. Their second goal put the game out of the reach of Denmark. With that result Australia advances to the Quarterfinals. This will be the fourth time they have reached the Quarterfinals. Australia will play France or Morocco. Denmark has been eliminated.

Switzerland won Group A. Australia won Group B. Japan won Group C. England won Group D. The Netherlands won Group E. France won Group F. Sweden won Group G. Colombia won Group H.

Japan, Spain, England, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Colombia, Australia, Nigeria, the Netherlands, the United States, Denmark, South Africa, France, Jamaica, and Morocco advanced to the Round of 16.

Costa Rica, Zambia, the Republic of Ireland, Vietnam, Panama, New Zealand, the Philippines, Canada, Portugal, China, Haiti, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Germany, and the Korea Republic were eliminated in the group stage.

The Group H winner Colombia will take on Jamaica. This will be Colombias second ever Round of 16 match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. They did not qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019. Their best ever result was making it to the Round of 16 in 2015 and now 2023. This will be Jamaicas first ever Round of 16 match in their second ever FIFA Women’s World Cup. They were eliminated in the group stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019. Their best ever result has been making it to the Round of 16 in this years FIFA Women’s World Cup. Colombia is favored to win this game.

The Group F winner France will take on Morocco. This will be the fourth ever Round of 16 match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup for France. They were eliminated in the Quarterfinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019. Their best ever result was fourth place in 2011 (they lost the third place game). This will be Moroccos first ever Round of 16 match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Again this is their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup. That means that this is also the best result they have ever had.

Spain, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, England, and Australia are on to the Quarterfinals.

Switzerland, Norway, South Africa, and the United States, Nigeria, and Denmark have been eliminated in the Round of 16.

France are playing Morocco. Jamaica are playing Colombia.
