The knock out stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 continued with the Third Place game. The game was between the Group G winners Sweden and the Group B winning co-hosts Australia. The Final is coming up at 3:00 AM PST. That game will see Spain take on the Group D winners England. The winner of the Final will be the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Champions.

Sweden vs Australia

The Third Place match was between the Group G winners Sweden and the Group B winning co-hosts Australia. This was Swedens fourth time in the Third Place match. This was back to back appearances for them in the Third Place match. They have not lost any of their third place matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 they won third place after winning the Third Place game. Their best ever result was being Runners up in 2003. Sweden was awarded a penalty kick after VAR (review) in the 27′ minute. #18 Fridolina Rolfo scored on the penalty kick to give Sweden the lead. Australia got a yellow card in the 45+1′ minute. At halftime the score was 1-0 Sweden. Sweden took a two goal lead in the 62′ minute with a goal from #9 Kosovare Asllani. She got the ball just outside of the box. She took a shot that beat the keeper. Sweden got a yellow card in the 88′ minute. Sweden got a yellow card in the 9+5′ minute. The final score was 2-0 Sweden.

Possession and shots were close. The penalty kick put Australia in a hole. Sweden put the game away with their second goal. With that result Sweden has won third place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. This is the fourth time Sweden has won fourth place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Sweden has won third place in back to back FIFA Women’s World Cups after winning third place in 2019 and 2023. Australia finishes the tournament in fourth place. That is the best ever result they have had.

Switzerland won Group A. Australia won Group B. Japan won Group C. England won Group D. The Netherlands won Group E. France won Group F. Sweden won Group G. Colombia won Group H.

Japan, Spain, England, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Colombia, Australia, Nigeria, the Netherlands, the United States, Denmark, South Africa, France, Jamaica, and Morocco advanced to the Round of 16.

Costa Rica, Zambia, the Republic of Ireland, Vietnam, Panama, New Zealand, the Philippines, Canada, Portugal, China, Haiti, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Germany, and the Korea Republic were eliminated in the group stage.

Their are no longer any teams from Group A, Group B, Group E, Group F, Group G, and Group H in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. There are also no longer any teams from CONCACAF, CONBOL, CAF, the OFC, or the AFC. All of the remaining teams are from UEFA.
