The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 finished up last night. The Final was between Spain and the Group D winners England. The winner was crowned the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Champions.
I am kind of glad the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is over. Is was a lot of fun and exciting but 3:00 am games are not the most enjoyable. Outside of the game times it was a solid event. There was a lot of excitement and the co-hosts Australia had a good showing. I will have a full recap of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 coming soon.
Spain vs England
The Final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 was between Spain and the Group D winners England. Spain was the only team that did not win their group to advance past the Round of 16. This was Spains first Final at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 they were eliminated in the Round of 16. Making it to the final is the best result they have ever had. This was Englands first time in the Final at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 they got fourth place after losing the third place game. Their best ever result at the FIFA Women’s World Cup was coming in third place after winning the Third Place match in 2015.
Spain took the lead in the 29′ minute with a goal from #19 Olga Carmona. The ball was put into the box in front of her. She got to it first and was able to score. At hlaftime the score was 1-0 Spain. England got a yellow card in the 55′ minute. After VAR (review) in the 66′ minute Spain was awarded a penalty kick. #1 Mary Earps of England saved the penalty kick. Spain got a yellow card in the 78′ minute. The final score was 1-0 Spain.
It is very fitting that the final game of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 had one team that did not score. Majority of the games in this tournament saw at least one team not score. One goal made all of the difference in this game. It looked like it was going to be a close game and it was. With this result Spain have won the tournament. Spain are the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Champions. This is their first FIFA Women’s World Cup Championship. England won second place. This is the second time they have won second place.
Switzerland won Group A. Australia won Group B. Japan won Group C. England won Group D. The Netherlands won Group E. France won Group F. Sweden won Group G. Colombia won Group H.
Japan, Spain, England, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Colombia, Australia, Nigeria, the Netherlands, the United States, Denmark, South Africa, France, Jamaica, and Morocco advanced to the Round of 16.
Costa Rica, Zambia, the Republic of Ireland, Vietnam, Panama, New Zealand, the Philippines, Canada, Portugal, China, Haiti, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Germany, and the Korea Republic were eliminated in the group stage.
Spain are the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Champions. England won second place (lost in final). Sweden Won third place (won third place match). Australia won fourth place (lost in third place match).
Switzerland, South Africa, Norway, the United states, Denmark, Morocco, Nigeria, and Jamaica were eliminated in the Round of 16. The Netherlands, Japan, France, and Colombia were eliminated in the Quarterfinals. Sweden and Australia have been eliminated in the Semifinals. England lost in the final.
