The 2024 Sierra Inline Hockey League season began last weekend. It was a dramatic opening weekend for the league. There were two games scheduled for the opening weekend of play. Team A was set to take on Team B at noon. Team C (Reno Pond Hockey) was going to take on Team D for the 1:00 pm game. Heading into the weekend several SIHL events were canceled due to maintenance or weather. Things were looking good as the SIHL said “Rink is dry, prepare for cold and windy conditions” just before the noon game.

Cold Conditions were going to be the theme in the first week of Sierra Inline Hockey League Action. The goalie for Team A did not show up for their game. The wooden goalie was set up on the goal at one end. Despite that the game started off competitive. Both teams had fairly balanced talent. Both teams were creating plenty of chances. Both teams had scored a couple of goals. Then play stopped. The officials and both teams gathered around the penalty box. Six or seven minutes into the game, the game was postponed. The weather had not improved. The rink had continued to get wet. I did not see it snow or rain on the rink. The wind was really strong. There was enough moisture that it was causing the rink surface to get wet. The roof leaking may have been contributing to a wet rink as well. The cold temperature also caused the rink to not dry up. If the rink got even the slightest wet, it was going to remain wet. Games had been postponed for the rest of week one. The teams did not even take the rink for the second game between Team C (Reno Pond Hockey) and Team D.

The SIHL has announced that they will reschedule games for week two. However after week one, week two is up in the air if it is happening at all. The forecast is currently showing cloudy weather with low temperatures in Carson City next weekend. That could all change. The leaking roof is also a factor. Even with better weather, if the snow starts to melt at all it will cause a wet playing surface on the rink.
