The future home of the Oakland Athletics will be Las Vegas Nevada. Their new stadium is set to be built on the site of the Tropicana casino. The Oakland Athletics stadium deal will end after this season. They have decided not to return to the Oakland Coliseum after this season. Their new stadium in Las Vegas will not be completed for a few years. This would leave the Athletics without a home stadium. There was a lot of rumors about where they would play. One of the big ones was that they might play games in Las Vegas and Reno. The Athletics just announced that they would be playing in Sacramento.

The Oakland Athletics did mention playing at Greater Nevada Field in Reno as a possibility. In which case they would share the ballpark with the Reno Aces. At the time it was also rumored that they could play at the Las Vegas Ballpark and share the stadium with their Pacific Coast League affiliate, the Las Vegas Aviators. It was also a possibility that the Athletics could play home games in both Reno and Las Vegas. While it would have been chaotic, I would have loved to see the Giants play the Athletics in Reno. However they have decided to play in Sacramento at Sutter Health Park (formerly Raley Field). The San Fransisco Giants Pacific Coast League affiliate Sacramento River Cats currently occupy the stadium. I have not seen if the River Cats will stay at Sutter Health Park or if they will temporarily relocate. There are plenty of stadiums in Sacramento that could temporally host the River Cats. Outside of Sacramento there are several options as well. Likely Sutter Health Park will try to accommodate both teams.

Sacramento has been trying to attract a Major League Baseball team for at least thirty six years. When the Sacramento Kings built Arco Arena they had plans to build a multipurpose stadium to attract The Raiders and Athletics. Arco Arena was completed and the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association played their for twenty eight years. The Sacramento Attack of the Arena Football League, the Sacramento Knights indoor soccer team, the Sacramento River Rats of Roller Hockey International, and the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA also played at Arco Arena. When Arco Arena was built, the foundation for a multipurpose stadium was also built. Funds ran out for the stadium after the foundation was built. The Raiders and Athletics at that time showed no interest in moving to Sacramento. The stadium was never built. There was a tunnel built from the foundation of the unbuilt stadium that lead into Arco Arena. After all these years and Arco Arena now gone, the Athletics are finally moving to Sacramento.
