Soccer at the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad has started. Both of the men’s and the women’s tournaments have started. I was not able to get a recap for day one of soccer at Paris 2024. That will be included in todays post. Check out my preview post for the event if you have not. There were eight games yesterday. All of yesterdays games were for the men’s tournament. Argentina played Morocco. Uzbekistan played Spain. Guinea played New Zealand. Egypt played the Dominican Republic. Iraq played Ukraine. Japan played Paraguay. France played the United States. Mali played Israel. There was a major incident involving fans at the Argentina and Morocco match. The women’s tournament started today. There was six matches today. Canada played New Zealand. Spain played Japan. Germany played Australia. Nigeria played Brazil. France played Colombia. The United States played Zambia. There is some big news from the women’s tournament. The Canadian Olympic Committee has removed the Canadian Women’s National Team head coach from the Canadian Olympic Team. She has been sent home. This is the biggest news today. It is the biggest news of Paris 2024 so far.
Uzbekistan lost 1-2 to Spain in a mens Group C match. Spain scored with Uzbekistan tying during stoppage time in the first half. Spain scored in the second half to win. Uzbekistan will play Egypt next. Spain will play the Dominican Republic next.
New Zealand beat Guinea 2-1 in a men’s Group A match. New Zealand had a 1-0 lead after the first half. Guinea tied the game in the 72′ minute. New Zealand scored the game winning goal in the 76′ minute. Guinea will play France next. New Zealand will play the United States next.
Egypt and the Dominican Republic ended their men’s Group C match in a 0-0 draw. Neither team scored. Egypt will play Uzbekistan next. The Dominican Republic will play Spain next.
Iraq beat Ukraine 2-1 in a men’s Group B game. Ukraine took the lead in the 53′ minute. Iraq tied the game three minutes later. Iraq scored again in the 75′ minute to win the game. Iraq will play Argentina next. Ukraine will play Morocco next.
Japan obliterated Paraguay 5-0 in a men’s Group D match. Japan was only leading 1-0 at halftime. They kick it up a notch with four goals in the second half. Japan will play Mali next. Paraguay will play Israel.
The United Stated were defeated by France 3-0 in their men’s Group A match. I did a full game review for this one. The United States made too many mistakes without being able to capitalize on their scoring chances. France will play Guinea next. The United States will play New Zealand next.
Mali and Israel finished their men’s Group D match in a 1-1 draw. Mali scored an own goal in the second half. They scored on Israel within ten minutes to tie the game. Neither team did well in this one. Mali will play Japan next. Israel will play Paraguay next.
France leads Group A. Iraq lead Group B. Spain lead Group C. Japan lead Group D. It has only been one game. Teams still have two more. While winning the first game is important, teams can still advance after losing the first game.
Canada played New Zealand. It was a women’s Group A match. New Zealand took the lead in the 13′ minute. Canada tied the game right at halftime. Canada took the lead in the 79′ minute. The final score was 2-1 Canada. Canada play France next. New Zealand play Colombia next.
The Canadian head coach has since been suspended by the Canadian Olympic Committee. The suspension is for the remainder of Paris 2024. It is unclear if she will return after the Olympics. The suspension is a result of spying used by the Canadian team. They used drones and other tactics to spy on other teams practicing. Their assistant coach is now the head coach.
Spain played Japan. I was a women’s Group C match. Japan took the lead in the 13′ minute. Spain tied the game in the 22′ minute. Spain took the lead in the 74′ minute. The final score was 2-1 Spain. Spain will play Nigeria in their next match. Japan will play Brazil in their next match.
Germany took on Australia. It was a women’s Group B match. Germany took the lead in the 24′ minute. Germany added to their lead in the 64′ minute. Germany scored again in the 68′ minute. The final score was 3-0 Germany. Germany will face the United States next. Australia will play Zambia next.
Nigeria played Brazil. It was a women’s Group C match. Brazil took the lead in the 37′ minute. Neither team scored in the second half. The final score was 1-0 Brazil. Nigeria will play Spain next. Brazil will play Japan next.
France played Colombia. It was a Women’s Group A match. France took the lead in the 6′ minute. France scored again in the 18′ minute. France scored again in the 42′ minute. Colombia scored in the 54′ minute. Colombia scored again in the 64′ minute. Colombia got a red card in the 85′ minute. The final score was 3-2 France. France will play Canada next. Colombia will take on New Zealand next.
The United States played Zambia. I did a full review for this game you can check out. The United States took the lead in the 17′ minute. The United States scored their second goal in the 24′ minute. The United States scored their third goal in the 25′ minute. Zambia received a yellow card in the 30′ minute. Neither team scored in the second half. The United States will play Germany next. Zambia will play Australia next.
France leads Group A. Germany and the United States are tied for the top spot in Group B. Spain lead Group C.
