Soccer at the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad continued on Tuesday. There were eight matches. All of the matches were for the men’s tournament. There were no matches on Monday. Tuesday was the final day of the group stage of the men’s tournament. The Dominican Republic played Uzbekistan. Spain played Egypt. Ukraine played Argentina. Morocco played Iraq. New Zealand played France. The United States played Guinea. Israel played Japan. Paraguay played Mali. Soccer at Paris 2024 continues tomorrow with six games.
The Dominican Republic played Uzbekistan. It was a Group C match. This match was taking place while Spain played Egypt. Uzbekistan got a yellow card in the 25′ minute. The score was 0-0 at halftime. The Dominican Republic scored in the 51′ minute on a penalty. The Dominican Republic got a yellow card in the 54′ minute. Uzbekistan tied the game in the 58′ minute. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. That is the end of Paris 2024 for both teams. Both teams failed to advance to the knockout stage.
Egypt played Spain. It was a Group C match. This match took place while the Dominican Republic played Uzbekistan. Egypt got a yellow card in the 6′ minute. Egypt took the lead in the 40′ minute. The Score was 1-0 Egypt at halftime. Egypt took a two goal lead in the 62′ minute. Spain scored in the 90′ minute. The final score was 2-1 Egypt. Egypt will play Paraguay next. Spain will play Japan next.
Ukraine played Argentina. This was a Group B match. This match was played at the same time Morocco was playing Iraq. The score was tied up at 0-0 after the first half. Argentina took the lead in the 47′ minute. Ukraine got a yellow card in the 53′ minute. Ukraine got another yellow card int he 82′ minute. Argentina scored again in extra time. The final score was 2-0 Argentina. Ukraine did not advance to the knockout stage. Argentina will play France next.
Morocco played Iraq. It was a Group B match. This game was played at the same time Ukraine was playing Argentina. Iraq got a yellow card in the 9′ minute. Morocco took the lead in the 19′ minute. Morocco took a two goal lead in the 28′ minute. Morocco took a three goal lead in the 36′ minute. The score was 3-0 at halftime. Neither team scored in the second half. The final score was 3-0 Morocco. Morocco will play the United States next. Iraq did not advance to the knockout stage.
New Zealand played France. This was a Group A match. This was played at the time the United states played Guinea. France took the lead in the 19′ minute. The score was 1-0 at halftime. New Zealand got a yellow card in the 63′ minute. France scored again int he 71′ minute. France took a three goal lead in the 74′ minute. The Final score was 3-0 France. New Zealand did not advance to the knockout stage. France will play Argentina next.
The United States played Guinea. Check out my full game review if you have not yet. This was a Group A match. It was played at the same time New Zealand was playing France. The United States were leading 2-0 at halftime. The final score was 3-0 United States. The United States will play Morocco next. Guinea did not advance to the knockout stage.
Israel played Japan. It was a Group D match. It was happening at the same time as Paraguay was playing Mali. Israel got a yellow card in the 16′ minute. The score was tied at 0-0 after the first half. Israel got another yellow card in the 71′ minute. Japan scored in extra time. The final score was 1-0 Japan. Israel did not advance to the knockout stage. Japan will play Spain next.
Paraguay played Mali. This was a Group D match. It was played at the same time Israel was playing Japan. Paraguay took the lead in the 5′ minute. Paraguay got a yellow card in the 38′ minute. Paraguay got another yellow card in extra time of the first half. The score was 1-0 Paraguay after the first half. Paraguay got another yellow card in the 58′ minute. Paraguay got yet another yellow card in the 71′ minute. Paraguay got two more yellow cards in extra time. Mali got three yellow cards in extra time. The final score was 1-0 Paraguay. Paraguay will play Egypt next. Mali did not advance to the knockout stage.
France won Group A. Morocco won Group B. Egypt won Group C. Japan Won Group D. The United States, Argentina, Spain, and Paraguay also advanced to the knockout stage. New Zealand, Guinea, Ukraine, Iraq, Mali, and Israel did not advance.
This is the first time the host nation France have advanced in the men’s Olympic tournament since Atlanta 1996. France were eliminated in the stage at Tokyo 2020. This is the first time that the United States have advanced to the knockout stage at the Olympics since Sydney 2000. The United States did not qualify for Tokyo 2020. New Zealand advanced past the group stage at Tokyo 2020 but has been eliminated in the group stage in Paris 2024. This was the first appearance for Guinea in this tournament. Being eliminated in the group stage is the best they have ever done. This is only the second time Morocco have made it to the knockout stage in this tournament. The last time they made it out of the group stage was at Munich 1972. This is the first time since Beijing 2008 that Argentina have advance to the knockout stage in this tournament. Argentina won back to back gold medals at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. This is Ukraines first appearance at this tournament. Being eliminated in the group stage is the best they have ever done. The last time that Iraq made it out of the group stage was Athens 2004. They got their highest ever result at that games coming in fourth place. The last time Egypt made it out of the group stage was at Tokyo 2020. That is back to back knockout round appearances for them. The last time Spain made it out of the group stage was at Tokyo 202 where they won the silver medal. This is the first Olympic men’s tournament for the Dominican Republic. Being eliminated in the group stage was their best ever result. This was also the first ever tournament for Uzbekistan. Being eliminated in the group stage was also their best result ever. The last time Japan made it out of the group stage was at Tokyo 2020 where as hosts they got fourth place. The last time Paraguay advanced to the knockout stage was at Athens 2004 where they won a silver medal. The only time Mali advanced to the knockout stage was at Athens 2004. Paris 2024 was only the second Olympics they qualified for. Israel has not advanced to the knockout stage since Montreal 1967. This was the first Olympic men’s soccer tournament they qualified for since Montreal 1976.
Five teams did not win games in this tournament. That is 31.25% of the teams in this tournament. At Tokyo 2020 only two teams did not win a game. That was 12.5%. That is a 18.75% increase. Brazil 2016, London 2012, Beijing 2008, and Barcelona 1992 also saw five or more teams not win a game. The defend gold medalists Brazil did not qualify for Paris 2024. Seven of the sixteen teams from Tokyo 2020 qualified for Paris 2024. That is 43.75% of teams returning. Of those returning teams, France, Japan, and Spain are the only ones who made it to the knockout stage. Only 42.85% of the teams who made the knockout stage at Tokyo 2020 made the knockout stage at Paris 2024. Spain are the only team who won a medal at Tokyo 2020 to make it to the knockout stage at Paris 2024.
France will play Argentina. Egypt will play Paraguay. The United states will play Morocco. Japan will play Spain. The Quarterfinals start Friday, August 2nd.
Only two teams have made it to the knockout stage at Paris 2024 who have not won medals in this event before. That means 25% of the teams still in this event have not won a medal in this event yet. Three of the remaining teams have not won a medal since before 1992. That is 37.5% of the remaining teams. That means 62.5% of the remaining teams have either never won a medal or have not won a medal in this event since it was changed to an under twenty three tournament. France won gold in 1984. Argentina won gold in 2004 and 2008 as well as two silver medals. Egypt has never medaled in this event. Paraguay won silver in 2004. Morocco have never medaled at this event. The United States won bronze and silver in 1904. Japan won bronze in 1968. Spain won the gold medal in 1992. Spain have also won three silver medals.
