The United States took on Morocco for their fourth match of Paris 2024. It was a quarterfinals match. The United states was coming off of a 3-0 victory over Guinea. The United States came into this match having secured the second place in Group A. The United States record was 2-1-0 going into this match. Morocco beat Iraq 3-0 in their last match. Morocco won Group A. Morocco were 2-0-1 going into this match. Both teams were tied on matches played heading into this one. They were also tied on goal differential.
The United States were looking to hand Morocco their first loss of Paris 2024. This was the first time that the United States were in the knockout stage of the Olympics since Sydney 2000. A win here would put them through to the semifinals where they would be guaranteed to at least play for a bronze medal. This was a pretty big deal for the United States. They just needed to continue to play at the same level they did in their last two group stage games.
In the 15′ minute Jack McGlynn of the United States got a yellow card. Morocco took the lead in the 29′ minute. They scored on a penalty. The awarded penalty was a weak call. It did not even go to video review.
The score was 1-0 Morocco at halftime.
Morocco received a yellow card in the 57′ minute. Morocco took a two goal lead in the 63′ minute. Morocco took a three goal lead in the 70′ minute. Paxton Aaronson of the United States received a yellow card in the 75′ minute. Morocco scored again in the 90’+1 minute. The final score was 4-0 Morocco.
The United States played like garbage. The penalty call in the first half was garbage but the United States never recovered. Then they let Morocco score three more goals. The United States had one shot on target this whole game. This game was a disaster. They were playing like it was a throw away group stage game. The United States have been eliminated. Morocco moves on. Typical United States soccer. They get your hopes up and then play like garbage.
The stats for this game are depressing. Morocco led in all categories that matter.
The United States men are done at Paris 2024. The United States will host the FIFA World cup in 2026. The United States will host the Olympics in 2028. Those will be even more opportunities to be disappointed. The women are still in their tournament. They play their first knockout stage game tomorrow.
