The Tahoe Knight Monsters rolled into their twelfth game of the season looking to shake off a tough loss and regain momentum against a new and unfamiliar opponent, the Greensboro Gargoyles. Tahoe, the ECHL affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights, entered the night ranked seventh in the league with a solid 7-4-0 record, but their recent 2-5 loss to Rapid City left them hungry for a rebound. Greensboro, meanwhile, came in sitting twenty-seventh in the standings at 2-5-3 and riding a three-game losing streak. They were still searching for consistency after a narrow 1-2 defeat to Wheeling. With this being the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, the matchup carried an added sense of intrigue as both sides looked to grab early bragging rights in a brand-new matchup.

The game also marked the return of goaltender Cameron Whitehead, who had just been reassigned to Tahoe from Henderson earlier in the week. His presence added another wrinkle to a Knight Monsters squad that continues to push near the top of their division. Though the game was non-conference, it carried real weight. Tahoe entered as one of the league’s stronger teams, while Greensboro was fighting to climb out of the bottom tier. It had all the makings of a classic clash between a contender and a team trying to spark a turnaround.

The Tahoe Knight Monsters had a strong start with a 1-0 lead after the first period. The second period was all Greensboro Gargoyles as they took a 2-1 lead going into the third period. The Knight Monsters scored two goals early in the third to retake the lead. The Gargoyles scored late to send the game to overtime. The Gargoyles found the back of the net quickly in overtime. It especially stings as the game winning goal was scored by former Knight Monster Patrick Newell. This was a game the Knight Monsters could have won. they gave up the lead multiple times. They did not build on either of their leads. They walked away with a point. They let the win slip away. The return of Cameron Whitehead did not seem to have a strong effect either way. I think it was more of a lack of offense being able to build on their leads leading to this loss than a defensive breakdown or goaltending. Tahoe could not get back in the win column and have dropped back to back games. Greensboro snapped their losing streak. It did take overtime to do it. This could the point in their season they look back on if they turn things around. For Greensboro its all about how they respond now. Will they continue to push out of the bottom of the league? Will they continue to struggle? For Tahoe they need to be able to maintain one goal leads. They have not been able to do that too much this season. Tahoe also need to build on their leads. A one goal lead isn’t enough. At least not for Tahoe.
