In their second game of the tournament the United States took on Canada. Both teams were undefeated heading into the game. The United States beat China 8-0 in their first game. Canada beat Germany 5-1 in their first game of the tournament. Both teams would go into this game fighting for Group A dominance. The United States and Canada are both power houses in this tournament. USA, Canada and ROC (Russia) were the top teams coming into this tournament.
Game Review
Canada took a 1-0 lead less then 2 minutes into the first period. The United States would be quick to respond. Andy Miele would tie the game about a minute later. Assists came from Brian O’Neil Steven Kampfer. The United States would take the lead with just over a minute left in the first period. That goal was scored by Ben Meyers. It was assisted by Sean Farrell and Jake Sanderson. The USA had a 2-1 lead going into the second period.
The United States would make it 3-1 USA 2 minutes into the second period. The goal was scored by Brendan Brisson. The assist came from Nick Shore. Ten minutes later Canada took a penalty for elbowing. USA was not able to capitalize on the powerplay. On the penalty kill Canada scored a short handed goal to bring the game within one goal. At the end of the second period the United States took a penalty for charging. The United States took a 3-2 lead into the third period.
Kenny Agostino would make it 2-4 USA 6 minutes into the third period. The USA would take penalties for high sticking and hooking. Canada would get a 5 on 3 powerplay late in the third period. Canada was unable to score and the USA won the game 2-4.
Huge win for the United States. It was the first time they beat Canada in the Olympics since 2010. This is a huge win as it propelled the to the top of Group A. Now they have a chance to go undefeated in group play. The United States just out hustled Canada. They were getting to pucks first. Our skating Canada. Playing more aggressive on the boards. They played the best I have seen any team play so far in this tournament. I’m hoping they can keep it up and The United States can win gold for the first time since 1980. It’s been 42 years since the miracle on ice. I believe we can do it again.
