Slovakia vs Latvia. Slovakia scored first. It was 1-1 after the first period. Slovakia scored twice in the second period to take a two goal lead into the third period. Latvia would get one back early in the third period. Slovakia would go back up by two goals about half way through the third period. Latvia would pull their goalie. Slovakia would score on the empty netter. The final score was 5-2 Slovakia.

5 goals on 33 shots is a lot. Neither team was able to score on the powerplay. Latvia is 0-3 in group play. I thought this game would have been closer. Both teams are at the bottom of Group C. In the end I don’t think either team is playing well enough at this point to make it past the first game in the elimination round.

Finland vs Sweden. Good rivalry match. Neither team scored in the first period. Sweden scored times times on the power play in the second period. They took a 3-0 lead into the third period. The game was not over yet though. Finland managed to tie the game in the third period after scoring three unanswered goals. One of those goals would come in the last 3 minutes of the period. Finland would then win the game 2 minutes into overtime. The final score was 4-3 Finland.

This was a close hard fought rivalry game. When Sweden went up 3-0 It didn’t look like Finland had much of a chance to win. Finland got to work and not only managed to tie the game but managed to get the goal early in overtime. This is what i expected from this game. Finland game up a lot of powerplay time. Sweden was able to capitalize on three of their powerplays. It was just a crazy game.

China vs Canada. Canada rolled right through China. it was 3-0 after the first period. 4-0 Canada after two periods. Finally the game ended with a 5-0 Canada win.

China is now 0-3 in group play. That’s about how well I though they would play. They have been shut out in two out of three games. I figured with the way the United States beat China that Canada my roll right through them. I did doubt it a little bit after China was able to play competitively with Germany. Moving into the elimination stage there are no positives for China. Canada on the other hand had an expectation for this game. They came into the game. They went to work. They got the result that was expected.

United States vs Germany. The United States won 3-2. With that they secured the top spot in Group A. I will be doing an in depth review of the game later.
