2022 Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey. We are now on day seven of the tournament. There were 4 games in the Men’s tournament. All the games were Quarterfinals games. The United States played Slovakia. ROC (Russia) played Denmark. Finland played Switzerland. Sweden played Canada. The winners would advance to the Semifinals. The losers would be eliminated.
United States vs Slovakia. I have a lot to say about this one. That will be for another post.
ROC (Russia) vs Denmark. ROC (Russia) had a 1-0 lead after the first period. ROC (Russia) would take a 2-1 lead after two periods. The final score was 3-1 ROC (Russia).
ROC (Russia) eliminates Denmark. ROC (Russia) is now onto the semifinals. ROC (Russia) will have a chance to medal. ROC (Russia) won the gold medal back in 2018.
Finland vs Switzerland. Finland scored first. Finland had a 2-0 lead after the first period. Switzerland got one back in the second period. Finland had a 3-1 lead after the second period. Finland would score two more in the third period. The final score was 5-1 Finland.
Finland has eliminated Switzerland. Finland will move on to the Semifinals. Finland now has a chance to medal. Finland was in control of the game despite being outshot. Finland rolls through Switzerland and onto the Semifinals.
Sweden vs Canada. The score was 0-0 after the first period. Both sides had chances to score on the powerplay. The score stayed 0-0 after the second period. Both teams had two powerplays that they failed to score on in the second period. Sweden took the lead 10 minutes into the third period. Canada pulled their goalie. Sweden scored on the empty net. The final score was 2-0 Sweden.
This game was a lot closer than the Canadas would have liked it to be. Canada wasn’t able to score. Sweden was. One goal made all the difference in this game. Canada was shutout. I am not sure when the last time that happened to Canada in the olympics. Canada (who is a hockey powerhouse) gets eliminated here. Sweden will advance to the Semifinals. I was hoping for this. I was hoping that Canada would be out and the United States wouldn’t have to face them in the gold medal game. Canada is home to the best hockey players in the world and they wont have a chance to medal in the olympics. If the NHL was at the olympics this tournament would look a lot more like the women’s tournament where Canada and USA play on a whole other level than anyone else. That didn’t happen and now the top two hockey countries in the world are out of the Men’s hockey tournament.
Here are the final standing:
Here is an image from the KHL Facebook page that does a really good job at explaining the standings.
Here is what the bracket looks like:
The Semifinals will be on the 18th.
