The big story in Figure Skating right now is how Kamila Valieva ROC (Russia) figure skater, tested positive for banned substances. First off Russia is already in trouble for doping. that’s why they compete as ROC (Russian Olympic Committee). Secondly she is underage. That’s just necessary information that I am throwing out there. Her testing positive led to a multiple day delay in handing out the medals for the figure skating team event. During that time there was a hearing where she used her grandfather as an excuse. After the hearing the decision was made that ROC would get their medals and she would be allowed to continue to compete. I think there needed to be a hard stance on this and there wasn’t. Sha’Carri Richardson (USA track star) was upset at this because in 2021 she wasn’t allowed to compete after testing positive for weed. I could write a whole blog just about this but the reality is that they are very different situations. It was two different governing bodies making the decisions. The International Olympic Committee didn’t make these choices. The choice to ban Sha’Carri Richardson for Japan 2021 was made by the US Anti-Doping Agency. The decision to allow Kamila Valieva to continue to compete was made or at least heavily influenced by the International Skating Union. I don’t have time to get into how messed up figure skating can be as a sport.
This story has been overshadowing the entire olympics. For good reason too. This could change how the IOC punishes doping. They may just allow it to happen. This will change how countries look at doping. I think that the IOC by allowing her to compete may have possibly opened up the door for everyone to start doping. I think this could end up like doping in baseball. It will be prevalent. The IOC will try to hide it. Then only those who are being publicly caught (like serious media attention) will be punished but a slap on wrist.
Anyway in olympic Figure Skating they had the Women’s Single Skating – Free Skating. ROC (Russia) Anna Scherbakova won gold. ROC (Russia) Alexandra Trusova won silver. Japans Kaori Sakamoto won bronze. The United States came in 7th, 10th, and 16th. Figure Skating continues in the AM.

Freestyle Skiing. In Freestyle Skiing there was Women’s Freeski Halfpipe Qualification Runs. Women’s Ski Cross. Men’s Freeski Halfpipe Qualification Runs. In Women’s Ski Cross, Swedens Sandra Naeslund won gold. Canadas Marielle Thompson won silver. Germanys Daniela Maier won bronze. Freestyle Skiing continues tonight.

Ice Hockey. There was only one game. The Women’s gold medal game between the United States and Canada. I will talk more in depth about this later. Canada won gold. The United States won silver. Both teams are still miles ahead of everyone else. The Men’s Semifinals are tonight.
