Tunisia vs France
Tunisia played France. France already advanced to the round of 16. A win would put Tunisia in a position to advance on tiebreakers if Australia vs Denmark ended in a draw or Australia loses. The game was scoreless at halftime. Tunisia broke the tie in the 58″ minute. The final was 1-0 Tunisia. Huge upset for Tunisia. Unfortunately, it would not be enough for Tunisia to advance. France outshot Tunisia. They also had majority of the possession. Tunisia was able to find the back of the net once which was all it took to win.
Australia vs Denmark
During the Tunisia vs France match, Australia was playing Denmark. If Denmark won, Australia, Denmark, and Tunisia would all tie. At that point, it would come down to tiebreakers. If Australia won they will advance. If Australia and Denmark draw, Australia might have tied with Tunisia. That would again come down to tiebreakers. The game was at a 0-0 draw going into the second half. Australia would score in the 60′ minute to break the tie. The final was 1-0 Australia. Denmark outshot Australia. Denmark also had most of the possession. Australias keeper saved the game and kept their world cup hopes alive. With the win Australia advances to the round of 16. Denmark couldn’t make it happen and was eliminated.
Poland vs Argentina
In the next match, Poland played Argentina. Poland needed a draw or win to advance. Argentina would advance with a win. With a draw, Argentina would tie the winner of Saudi Arabia vs Mexico. Then it would come down to tiebreakers. If Argentina loses they will be eliminated by the winner of the Saudi Arabia vs Mexico match. Argentina scored the games first goal in the 46′ minute. They would take a 1-0 lead into halftime. They would add to their lead in the 67′ minute. The final was 2-0 Argentina. Argentina had total control of this game. They heavily outshot Poland. They had almost 75% of possession. It was truly a one sided affair. With the win, Argentina advances. Poland also advances on tiebreakers.
Saudi Arabia vs Mexico
During the Poland vs Argentina game, Saudi Arabia played Mexico. Saudi Arabia needed a win and an Argentina loss to advance. If Saudi Arabia vs Mexico ended in a draw and Argentina lost Saudi Arabia will advance. If both games ended in a draw then Mexico would be eliminated and who advances between Argentina and Saudi Arabia would come down to tiebreakers. The only way Mexico would advance is if Argentina lost and they won. The score was at a 0-0 draw at half time. Mexico would end the draw quickly in the second half with a goal in the 47′ minute. They would follow that up shortly with a goal in the 52′ minute. That goal would give Mexico a 2-0 lead. Saudi Arabia would score in extra time to cut the lead down. It was not enough. The final score was 2-1 Mexico. Mexico put up a lot of shots. Mexico had majority of possession. On the other end Saudi Arabia couldn’t get much going during the game. Argentina won. Both teams would be eliminated despite the result.
Argentina won Group C. Argentina and Poland have advanced to the round of 16. Mexico and Saudi Arabia were eliminated. France won Group D. France and Australia have advanced to the round of 16. Tunisia and Denmark have been eliminated.
The Netherlands won Group A. The Netherlands and Senegal advance to the round of 16. Ecuador and Qatar are eliminated in the group stage. England won Group B. England and the United States advance to the round of 16. Iran and Wales were eliminated.
Spain leads Group E. Croatia leads Group F. Brazil leads Group G. Portugal leads Group H.
Croatia vs Belgium. Either team would advance with a win. Croatia would advance with a draw. Belgium might advance on tiebreakers with a draw. Croatia could still advance with a loss. Belgium would not advance with a loss.
Canada vs Morocco. Canada has already been eliminated. If Morocco wins they will advance. If this game ends in a draw Morocco could advance with a Belgium loss. If Morocco loses and Belgium wins Morocco will be eliminated.
Japan vs Spain. With a win, either team will advance. With a draw, Spain would advance. Japan would advance on a draw if Costa Rica loses. If both Japan vs Spain and Costa Rica vs Germany end in draws, then Japan might advance on tiebreakers. Spain could advance with a loss. Japan would not advance with a loss.
Germany vs Costa Rica. Costa Rica would advance with a win. Germany would advance with a win if Japan loses. If Germany wins and Spain loses it will come down to tiebreakers. If the game ends in a draw, Coast Rica could advance with a Japan loss. If Germany vs Costa Rica ends in a draw, and Spain loses Costa Rica Could Advance on tiebreakers. Germany would not advance if this game ends in a draw. Neither team would advance with a loss.
The Netherlands will play the United States. Argentina will play Australia. France will play Poland. England will play Senegal. The other four round of 16 matchups are to be determined.
