The Tahoe Knight Monsters of the ECHL announced their new head coach today. The announcement came via social media. The announcement came on short notice. The team put out a tweet saying something was happening. Then a few hours later they announced their new head coach. So who is going to be the first ever Tahoe Knight Monsters head coach? Alex Loh will be the Tahoe Knight Monsters head coach for the 2024-25 season. Other members of the Tahoe Knight Monsters coaching and hockey operations staff have yet to be announced. The Tahoe Knight Monsters have also still not announced an affiliate for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

According to hockeydb.com Alex Loh did not play professional hockey. He stepped into the assistant coaching role for the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL for the 2015-16 season. The Adirondack Thunder were the Calgary Flames affiliate at that time. He was the Head coach for the Adirondack Thunder from the 2018-19 season to the 2021-22 season. During that time the Adirondack Thunder were affiliated with the New Jersey Devils. Alex Loh became an assistant coach for the Savannah Ghost Pirates for the 2022-23 season. Alex Loh started the 2023-24 season as an assistant coach for the Savannah Ghost Pirates before taking over head coaching duties in February. The Savannah Ghost Pirates did not make the playoffs in either of the season with Alex Loh on the coaching staff. The Adirondack Thunder made the playoffs four out of the six years he was on their coaching staff. The Savannah Ghost Pirates record was 30-34-7 last season.

Alex Loh coming from the Savannah Ghost Pirates, could be another indication that the Tahoe Knight Monsters will be affiliated with the Vegas Golden Knights. With Jared Staal announced as the new Savannah Ghost Pirates head coach, it looks like the Savannah Ghost Pirates will be affiliates with the Carolina Hurricanes leaving the Vegas Golden Knights open to be affiliated with the Tahoe Knight Monsters. Of course all of that is just speculation at this point. I hope we get an affiliation announcement before the NHL draft. I don’t think there will be any news about changes in ECHL affiliates until after the ECHL season is completed. The ECHL playoffs are still going on. I don’t think the Tahoe Knight Monsters will reveal their jerseys prior to announcing their NHL affiliate. As far as this announcement goes, it is kind of like “alright we have a coach”. I am not overly excited about this announcement. Again most of their coaching staff have not been announced. I think Alex Loh is a capable coach. He has proven himself as an ECHL coach despite a lack of playing professional hockey. I think he will be a fine coach for at least the first season. I am very interested in who else is brought onto the coaching staff. I am also very interested in where the Knight Monsters go from here.

“We are very excited to welcome Alex Loh to the Knight Monsters family, Alex’s experience and familiarity with the league makes him a perfect fit for our organization as we head into our inaugural season.”

  4. […] The Tahoe Knight Monsters made history by naming Alex Loh as their first-ever head coach. Loh’s story is a unique one, unlike many professional coaches, he never played pro hockey himself. Instead, he built his reputation through coaching experience and leadership behind the bench. Before joining Tahoe, Loh served as the head coach of the Savannah Ghost Pirates, the former ECHL affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. His résumé also includes time at Colby College and with the Adirondack Thunder in the ECHL, giving him a well-rounded background in player development and team building. The team’s first official signing was Anthony Collins, marking a historic moment for the new franchise. Shortly after, Luke Adam was named the first captain in Tahoe Knight Monsters history, with Anthony Collins and Logan Nelson serving as alternate captains. This leadership group brought plenty of experience to the table, providing a strong foundation for a brand-new team finding its identity in its inaugural season. […]
