The Games of the XXXIII Olympiad started this morning. I am super late to getting this out. I tried to get it out yesterday but that didn’t happen. Now multiple games have been played before I got this out. Soccer has been in the Olympics every year since 1936. Women’s soccer was added in 1996. The 2024 Summer Olympics, are being hosted by Paris, France. Soccer will go from the 24th of July to the 10th of August. There are seven venues for this event in seven different cities across France. There are 504 soccer players in this tournament. There are 23 nations competing in this tournament. For the Olympics the mens tournament is and under-23 tournament. All of the mens players with some exceptions have to be under 23 years old. Each team is given three spots for overage players. The Women’s tournament consists of each nations women’s national team. There are sixteen teams in the mens tournament. There are twelve teams in the women’s tournament. Both tournaments consist of a group stage and an elimination stage.

There are seven venues in seven cities. I talked about all of the Paris 2024 venues in an earlier post. Stade de Marseille has a capacity of 67,394. Stade de Lyon has a capacity of 59,186. Parc des Princes has a capacity of 47, 929. Satde de Bordeaux has a capacity of 42,115. Stade Geoffroy-Guichard has a capacity of 41,965. Stade de Nice has a capacity of 36,178. Stade de la Beaujoire has a capacity of 35,322. All of the stadiums used for soccer at Paris 2024 were preexisting. They all also permeant soccer teams.

Brazil won the gold medal in Rio 2026 and in Tokyo 2020 but did not qualify for Paris 2024. A new champion will be crowned in this tournament. Group A consists of the hosts France, the United States, Guinea, and New Zealand. Group B consists of Argentina, Morocco, Iraq, and Ukraine. in Group C are Uzbekistan, Spain, Egypt, and the Dominican Republic. In Group D are Japan, Paraguay, Mali, and Israel.

The group stage is a round robin. Each team plays the other teams in their group once. The top two teams advance to the knock out stage. The knock out stage is quarterfinals, then semifinals, then the gold medal and bronze medal matches. The gold medal match for the men is on August 9th.

Canada won the gold medal in Tokyo 2020. They will be looking to defend their championship at Paris 2024. In Group A are France, Colombia, Canada, and New Zealand. In Group B are the United States, Zambia, Germany, and Australia. In Group C are Spain, Japan, Nigeria, and Brazil.

Like the mens tournament there will be a round robin group stage followed by an elimination stage. The elimination stage is single elimination. The top two teams from each group and the top two third place teams will advance to the elimination stage. Like the mens tournament, the women’s tournament elimination stage is the quarterfinals, then semifinals, then the gold medal and bronze medal matches. The gold medal match for the women will be on August 10th.
