The United States took on France for their opening match of the Paris 2024 mens soccer tournament. This was the first match of the 2024 Summer Olympics for both teams. Both teams looked fairly even in the lead up to this match. The game was at Stade de Marseille; Marseille, France. This was the first game for the United States in the mens Olympic tournament since 2008. It would have been a huge win for the United states to beat France at home. There was a lot of pressure on France to win this game as they are the hosts of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

I expected a close match. Both teams seemed to be close on paper. Neither side looked like they had a huge advantage. Overall I didn’t really know what to expect.

France got a yellow card in the 17′ minute. The United States got a yellow card in the 37′ minute. Neither team scored in the first half. The game was tied at 0-0 going into the second half.

France took the lead in the 61′ minute. Alexandre Lacazette scored the goal. Michael Olise got the assist. France scored again in the 69′ minute. Michael Olise scored the goal. Alexandre Lacazette got the assist. France scored again in the 85′ minute. Loic Blade scored the goal. Joris Chatard got the assist. The final score was 3-0 France.

This is the worst possible way to start Paris 2024. After that performance it is a miracle the United States is in the tournament. The United states had some good chances but couldn’t finish their opportunities. France was patient and got the goals. The United States were just lobbing the ball to no one. No one one was pushing upfront for large chunks of the game. They were letting France just get as close as they wanted to our not without really pressuring them. Hopefully they can turn it around by game two.

The United states will play New Zealand in their second group stage match on Saturday, July 27th.
