They have qualified for the last three Olympics in a row. They got ninth place in the last FIBA women’s world cup. The highest they ever finished was second place in the 1975 FIBA Women’s World Cup.

The United States has the best team. Going into the women’s basketball event at the Olympics always seems like it is the United States event to lose. They are the defending champions. They could make it five Olympics in a row. Like with the men, the women will want to get off to a strong start here. This is a rematch of the Tokyo 2020 gold medal match. A win here for the United States would show everyone else in this tournament that they came to win. They have a lot of pressure to preform. Being the best comes with that pressure. A win for Japan would be huge. It would not only be not only be a win against a team that defeated you on your own home turf, but it would also be a win against the best women’s basketball team in the world.
