The NHL unofficially announced two out door hockey games that will take place in Lake Tahoe.
Normally on January 1st the National Hockey League plays the Winter Classic. This year is different. We are already in January and the NHL season hasn’t started. Hockey fans woke January 1st not to a winter classic but to some big outdoor NHL news broke this morning. What has been reported is that the NHL will play two outdoor hockey games in Lake Tahoe. The venue for these games will be Edgewood. The golf course that hosts a celerity tournament every summer. I have never seen an ice rink built on a golf course so that alone is worth watching for. The first game will be the Vegas Golden Knights VS the Colorado Avalanche on February 20th. The second game will be the Boston Bruins VS the Philadelphia Flyers on February 21st. There will be no fans in attendance. The NHL has yet to make the announcement. I think an official announcement will come before the start of the season on January 13th. If an official announcement is not made by February 1st I don’t think its going to happen.
This is huge for hockey in our area. Having fans or not this is huge. This is decently unique. I think non hockey fans in our area will tune in just because it’s happening Lake Tahoe. I think a lot of people in our area may experience watching hockey for the first time. I think this is the type of event that will cause kids to want to try hockey. This could be the moment where a lot of people fall in love with hockey. A future NHLer could point to this moment and say “That’s when I decided to be a hockey player”. This will be another big moment to add to our area’s hockey history.
