The United States took on Japan for their first game of women’s basketball at Paris 2024. The game was at Pierre Mauroy Stadium. The game started at 12:00 pm PST. This was the first game of the tournament for both teams. It was a Group C game.
The United States are the defending champions after winning gold at Tokyo 2020. The United States have won the Olympic women’s basketball event seven times in a row. They have won every event going back to 1996. Japan got second place at Tokyo 2020 which was their best ever finish at the Olympics. Japan have qualified six times for women’s basketball at the Olympics. They have qualified for the last three Olympics in a row.
The United States took a 22-15 lead after the first quarter. Japan was only behind by six points after the first quarter. The United States were leading 50-39 after the second quarter. The United States had a eleven point lead at halftime.
The United States had a twenty two point lead after the third quarter. The score was 79-57 USA. The final score 102-76 United States. The United States finished their first game with a twenty six point lead. The United states scored over twenty points in each quarter. They held Japan to under twenty points in three quarters.
This was a blowout. I thought it might be closer. It looks like this will be another Olympics where the United States dominate women’s basketball. There was a Japan fan with a sign that read “You need Caitlin Clark to beat us.” It is clear that the United States did not need her to beat Japan. That are not really going to need her to win gold in this Olympics. However she is an excellent basketball player that did deserve to play for the United States at Paris 2024. Japan will look to bounce back against Germany.
The United States lead Group C. Germany are second in the group. Belgium are third in the group. Japan are last in the group. The United States are the only team to cross over 100 points so far.
The United States take on Belgium for their second game of the group stage. That game will be on Thursday, August 1st, 2024. The Start is scheduled for 12:00 PM. That game will be at Pierre Mauroy Stadium.
