Reno Pond Hockey took on the Slappy Gilmores in their last game. It was game 5 for Reno Pond Hockey. That marks about halfway through the season. The game took place on October 23, 2021 at 9:00PM at Reno Ice. The game saw one of the largest crowds at a Reno Pond Hockey game this season. This was also the first time that Reno Pond Hockey wore their white jerseys this season.

Reno Pond Hockey was coming off of a 4-9 loss against Cruz Construction. Reno Pond Hockey was 2-2-0 heading into the game. Reno Pond Hockey sat in 6th in the standings. The Slappy Gilmores came into this game after a 9-3 win against Q&D Construction. The Slappy Gilmores were in 4th place in the standings. Reno Pond Hockey had not played the Slappy Gilmores in the regular season heading into this game. They did play in a preseason game prior to the summer 2021 season.

To start off the officials didn’t show up. I don’t know why. One of the rink staff who I don’t think is a regular official at the rink, refereed the game. I don’t know any of the story behind this. I just appreciate that he was there so we could have a game. The Slappy Gilmores scored first. Reno Pond Hockey responded and had a 2-1 lead after the first period. The Slappy Gilmores scored three straight making it 2-4 in the second. #11 Phillip Goodman was able to cut the deficit down to one goal in the final minute of the second. It was 3-4 heading into the third period. Reno Pond Hockey picked up the energy in the third period. They were able to tie the game with a goal on the power play. Things got heated in the third. There were several times where players got in each others faces or flat out took out other players. Regulation ended in a tie. In this league tied games go straight to a shootout. It was a best of 3. The Slappy Gilmores went first. Reno Pond Hockey won the shootout 1-0. #22 Casey Dowling scored the only and game winning goal in the shootout.

It was close game and competitive game. I would love to have a whole season with teams this close and competitive. Reno Pond Hockey fought back from a 2 goal deficit. That shows how scrappy this team can be and that you cannot count them out. It was incredible work from all three forward lines and both defensive lines. #35 Clint McCoy had an amazing game in net. He denied some really good chances to keep Reno Pond Hockey in the game. Then after having a great three periods he shutout the Slappy Gilmores in the shootout. I’m proud of the effort everyone put in. I am definitely impressed with the end result.

  3. […] Reno Pond Hockey started the season out against Blue Moon. The game ended in a 6-4 loss continuing the losing steak to 10 games. Reno Pond Hockey would finally break their losing streak in game 2. They would beat Q&D Construction 10-4. In game 3 Reno Pond Hockey face off with the Desert Dogs. Reno Pond Hockey lost by one goal to the Desert Dogs in the summer season which kicked off Reno Pond Hockeys 10 game losing streak. It was also the game where Dominic Hyer was suspended. Reno Pond Hockey managed to get their revenge by beating the Desert Dogs 4-3. One of the most memorable parts of this game was when I overheard a player on the Desert Dogs say that we are good enough to be beating them while we had the lead. Game 4 was a matchup with Cruz Construction. We lost that one 4-9. Then we played our rivals the Slappy Gilmores for game 5. We were able to hold them off for a 5-4 shootout win. […]
