Next up in my American Hockey League concept series is the Calgary Wranglers. They are the primary affiliate of the Calgary Flames. They play in the 19,89-seat Scotiabank Saddle Dome. They share the arena withe their NHL affiliate the Calgary Flames, the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen, and the NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks. The Calgary Flames have been leading a push to replace the forty-nine year old stadium. The Calgary Wranglers are one of two teams to share an arena with their NHL affiliate.
Calgary Alberta has a population of 1,306,784. The Calgary Wranglers entered the AHL in 1977 as the Maine Mariners. They have been the Calgary Flames affiliate since 1993. In 2022 they relocated the Stockton Heat from Stockton California to Calgary Alberta. When they relocated the team they also renamed the team after an old WHL franchise that existed from 1977 to 1987.
For this concept, the Calgary Wranglers play in the AHL’s West Coast Division in the Western Conference. The other teams in the West Coast Division are the Abbotsford Canucks, Bakersfield Condors, Coachella Valley Firebirds, Henderson Silver Knights, Ontario Reign, San Diego Gulls, and San Jose Barracuda.

The Calgary Wranglers have three logos. Their primary logo is a W with two yellow flames shooting up. It is inspired by the old Atlanta Flames logo. If the logos are overlaid, the flames are almost identical. Their second logo is just a wordmark logo. Their third logo is a horse head. It is inspired by the Calgary Flames Blasty logo. Their colors are the same as the Calgary Flames, red, yellow, white, and black. I did not make these logos. I did make an inaugural season logo. I took inspiration for the logo from the Calgary Flames 40th anniversary logo. From what I could tell the Wranglers are not doing anything special for their first season in Calgary.

The Home jersey is red, white, and yellow. It has the primary logo on the front. It also has the inaugural logo on the front. The inaugural logo is on all of the jerseys. On the right shoulder is the Calgary Flames white logo. On the left shoulder is the horse logo. The pattern is inspired by the WHA Calgary Cowboys jersey. On the collar, it says “join the herd” which is the Wranglers motto. The Away jersey is white, red, and yellow. It has the same pattern as the Home jersey. It has mostly the same logos. The only change in the logos is the white Calgary Flames logo is replaces with the primary calgary flames logo.
The Alternate jersey is black, white, yellow, and red. On the front is the horse logo. On the shoulders are the Calgary Flames white logo and the Wranglers primary logo. On the Collar is says “join the herd” just like the Home and Away jerseys.
The Retro jersey is inspired by the WHL Calgary Wranglers. It is white, blue, and red. On the front is the logo used from 1984 to 1987. The logo is a W with a cowboy riding a horse and a lasso. This would have been one of their jerseys used between 1984 and 1987. It is unclear when they used this jersey or if it was used as a home, away, or alternate jersey. On the collar, it has 1978-1987 for when the team existed.
The City jersey is two shades of red and white. It is inspired by the Calgary flag. On the front is the design seen on the flag. On the collar is 1875 for when Calgary was founded. The jersey itself is inspired by the Calgary Tigers.
The Affiliate Remix jersey is black, yellow, and red. It is a remix of the Calgary Flames away jersey. The jersey has the same logos as the Home jersey. On the Collar it says “C of red” which is the Calgary Flames motto.
The Calgary Wranglers have nine Heritage jerseys. The Montoc Golden Flames (1984-87), Salt Lake Golden Eagles (1987-93), Saint John Flames (1993-03), Lowell Lock Monsters (2003-05), Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights (2005-07), Quad City Flames (2007-09), Abbotsford Heat (2009-14), Adirondack Flames (2014-15), and the Stockton Heat (2015-2022). The Heritage jerseys are inspired by the Calgary Flames former primary affiliates.
