2022 AHL Concept

2023 AHL Whale Bowl | AHL Concept Part Eighteen

I am back with another American Hockey League event concept. Today I have the Whale Bowl. The Whale Bowl is named after the Hartford Whalers. In this concept the Whale Bowl is designed to celebrate the World Hockey Association. For the 2023 addition of the Whale Bowl the Hartford Wolf Pack host the Iowa Wild.

The idea behind this is that the University of Connecticut hosts an annual where they put an ice rink on their football field. The event would include multiple games mainly focusing around local teams and the University of Connecticut’s ice hockey program. The Whale Bowl caps of this event with a game on the last day of February.

A real Whale Bowl happened in 2011. For this concept, this has been an annual event since then.

The primary logo for the Whale Bowl is green, blue, grey, and white. It is the colors of the Hartford Whalers. On the top, it has the Whalers logo. Bellow that it has the event name. It is all put together with a grey background. It has a blue outline. It is inspired by two Whalers logos. The Whalers primary logo that was used from 1992 to1997 and one of their alternate logos that was used from 1979 to 1992.

The first logo is the secondary logo for the event. It is the primary logo without the grey background. It is designed to more closely match the alternate logos that was used from 1979 to 1992. The second logo is a matchup logo. The bottom three logos are alternate event logos. They were designed to better fit on the jerseys. They take inspiration from the logo for the real life Whale Bowl that happened in 2011.

These are the team logos for the event. The main Hartford Wolf Pack logo is designed after the New England Whalers original logo. Their other logo is a wolf head taken from part of one of their alternate logos. Their connection with the World Hockey Association is through the Hartford Whalers who played in the WHA prior to joining the NHL. The Hartford Wolf Pack even occupy the same arena the Whalers used to play in. The main logo for the Iowa Wild is based on one of the Minnesota Fighting Saints logos. The shape and the hockey sticks are direct references to the Saints original primary logo. The halo is another reference to the Saints. The Iowa Wild’s connection to the WHA comes through their affiliate the Minnesota Wild. The Minnesota Wild play in the same town as the Fighting Saints used too.

Other teams with connections to the WHA that play in the AHL include, the Abbotsford Canucks, the Bakersfield Condors, the Belleville Senators, the Calgary Wranglers, the Charlotte Checkers, the Chicago Wolves, the Cleveland Monsters, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, the Colorado Eagles, the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Manitoba Moose, the Ontario Reign, the Rochester Royals, the San Diego Gulls, the San Jose Barracuda, the Syracuse Crunch, the Texas Stars, the Toronto Marlies, the Tucson Roadrunners, and the Utica Comets. 24 total teams in the AHL have connections to the WHA. Teams without connections to the WHA won’t play in the Whale Bowl.

The Hartford jersey is navy, white, and red. It is inspired by the Hartford Whalers 1978-79 jerseys. On the front is their main logo for the event. On the shoulders is the wolf head logo. On the collar it says Whalers. The Iowa jersey is white, green, and wheat. It is inspired by the Minnesota Fighting Saints jerseys from 1972-73. On the front is their main logo for the event. It also has their 10th anniversary logo. It does not have shoulder logos. On the Collar it says saints. On the front of both jerseys is the Whale Bowl alternate logo in each teams colors.

In this concept, the Whale Bowl takes place at the 40,000-capacity Rentschler Field. It is primarily the home of the UConn Huskies of the NCAA. I chose Rentschler Field as the location of the Whale Bowl as it was the location of the real-life Whale Bowl in 2011. The Hartford Wolf Pack also seem to have a good relationship with the University of Connecticut as the Hartford Wolf Pack and the University of Connecticut Athletics both use the same arena.
