Next up in my American Hockey League concept series is the Grand Rapids Griffins. They are the primary affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. They play in the 12,000-capacity Van Andel Arena. Grand Rapids is only two and a half hours from Detroit. Grand Rapids has a population of 202,181. The Grand Rapids Griffins were founded in 1996 in the International Hockey League. They joined the AHL in 2001 after the IHL folded.
For this concept, the play in the AHL’s North Division in the Eastern Conference. The other teams in the North Division are the Belleville Senators, the Charlotte Checkers, the Laval Rocket, the Providence Bruins, the Rochester Americans, the Syracuse Crunch, and the Toronto Marlies.
The Grand Rapids Griffins were also in the Hockey Town Winterfest and the 2023 AHL Stadium Series Montreal.
The Grand Rapids Griffins primary logo is a griffin over the city skyline with the team name. Their second logo is a crest logo with GRG for grand rapids griffins. Their third logo is a wordmark logo that is made up of the skyline and the team name from the primary logo.
The Home jersey is red, black, and grey. on the front is the primary logo. On the shoulders are the Detroit Red Wings logo and the crest logo. On the collar it says “Go GRG”.
The Away jersey is white, red, and black. It has a similar pattern as the Home jersey with more influence from the Detroit Red Wings. It has the same logos. On the collar it says “Go GRG”.
The Alternate jersey is black, red, and grey. On the front is the griffin head from the primary logo. It does not have any shoulder logos. On the collar it says “Go GRG”.
The Retro jersey is inspired by the 2002 Griffins white jersey. It is white, blue, red, and grey. It has the old Griffins primary logo on the front. It has a wing pattern on the shoulders. On the collar is “EST. 1996” for the year the team was founded.
The City jersey is blue, red, and yellow. It is inspired by the Grand Rapids flag. On the front is GR for Grand Rapids. On the collar is “EST. 1826” for the year Grand Rapids was founded.
The Affiliate Remix jersey is red and black. It is inspired by the Detroit Red Wings away jersey. On the front is a G for Griffins. On the collar it says “LGRW” for lets go Red Wings. There are no shoulder logos on this one. The Griffins did have a jersey similar to this one. Honestly I think this would make a good Home jersey.
The Grand Rapids Griffins 2022 Hockey Town Winterfest jersey is inspired by the NFL. The jersey is inspired by the Detroit Lions jersey. It is red, black, and white. On the sleeves are GRG which is the team abbreviation. On the front is the primary and event logos. On the shoulders is the crest logo.
The Grand Rapids Griffins 2023 AHL Stadium Series Montreal jersey is white, red, and chrome. On the front of the jersey is a 2010/11 alternate logo. On the shoulder is a chrome logo from their 2018 fan-designed jersey. On the collar it says Grand Rapids. It has chrome numbers. It also has the event logo on the shoulder.
The Griffins have ten Heritage jerseys. The Pittsburgh Hornets (1936-39), the Indianapolis Capitals (1939-1952), the St. Louis Flyers (1952-1953), the Pittsburgh Hornets (1962-1967), the Baltimore Clippers (1973-1974), the New Haven Nighthawks (1975-1976), The Adirondack Red Wings (1979-1999), and the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks (1999-2002). The Heritage jerseys are inspired by the Detroit Red Wings former primary affiliates.
